Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its dedicated cult following celebrated the shows 20th anniversary recently with the Scooby Gang coming together for an anniversary photo shoot. In fact, Entertainment Weekly gathered most of the principle cast and creator Joss Whedon for their first joint interview and photo shoot in over a decade.
The show starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Boreanaz, Nicholas Brendon, Charisma Carpenter, Alyson Hannigan, Emma Caufield, James Marsters, Marc Blucas, Seth Green, Michelle Trachtenberg, Amber Benson and Anthony Stewart Head.
From 1997 to 2003, Buffy slayed popular culture with its mixed genres of supernatural drama, fantasy, horror, teenanger soap opera, action, comedy, and, on occasion, a musical. The show garnered a very loyal fan-base becoming one of the most watched television shows during its seven seasons. It also launched a number of very successful careers.
The world became obsessed with demon-killing, vampire-slaying and vampire-loving teenager Buffy Summers (Gellar) and her fellow-Scoobies, all of whom became integral in her fight against evil. Fans fell in love with Angel (Boreanaz), the charming vampire with a soul who became Buffy’s first love. Each episode featured life in Sunnydale, a town which happened to be built on top of a “Hellmouth.” This, of course, explained the unusually high numbers of monsters, vampires and demons which plagued the town. The Scooby Gang went through lots of plot twists including falling in and out of love, death, coming back from the dead, developing and/or recognizing their own individual powers (Willow played by Hannigan becomes a witch), gaining and losing souls among other complex issues.
These characters were brought to life by the one and only Joss Whedon. He explored the many challenges and “horrors,” according to Gellar, of adolescence and early adulthood, “through the manifestation of actual monsters.”
- Whedon says “People getting strength from my own little terrors-there is no better legacy than that.”
- Gellar tells ET that “Everybody got to be in their creative realm and to do what they were meant to do–and I think that created an intimacy with all of us–the reason we’re here 20 years later.” She also got creative with some collages on social media that she just “had to take”, despite the sign that said not to. One photo was posted with Kristine Sutherland and Michelle Trachtenberg, “the fam.” There was also a snapshot from the ET camera of herself and David Boreanaz with the caption “reunited and it feels so good.”
- “It was a gift of an acting job” Alyson Hannigan adds. She also took to Twitter to say “It was the High School Reunion I actually wanted to attend!”
Twenty years have passed and they still seem just as close and could definitely get rid of Sunnydale’s worst nightmares again! Unfortunately, there are no plans to reunite the cast for new episodes of Buffy, though there is the possibility of an animated version of the Scooby Gang.
You can look for your favorite Buffy stars on their future projects. David Boreanaz, who has been on the very successful series Bones with Emily Deschanel, will soon portray a Navy SEAL on a new CBS drama. Sarah Michelle Gellar is now using her creativity as cofounder for “Foodstirs.”
