Taylor Swift fans are celebrating the arrival of November 2020, as it signifies the date Swift is legally allowed to re-record her first five albums, and once again retain ownership of her music. Fans have flocked to social media to share their support with the hashtag #TaylorIsFree, and promises to only listen to the newly recorded albums, which she will own. Other fans have wondered how similar the albums will sound to the original recordings, given how much Taylor’s voice may have grown or changed since their original releases.
This follows a legal battle and public feud between Swift and Scooter Braun, who purchased Swift’s former label and effectively gained ownership of her catalog. Swift famously called that turn of events “worst case scenario” in an emotional tumblr post about the situation. Around that time, she told Good Morning America “Yeah, that’s true and it’s something that I’m very excited about doing because my contract says that starting November 2020, so next year, I can record albums one through five all over again. I’m very excited about it. I just think that artists deserve to own their own work. I just feel very passionately about that.”
The singer-songwriter has kept fairly quiet since her surprise summer release of the album “Folklore”. Swift herself hasn’t yet made any statements since the November 2020 lift has arrived, and it’s unclear if she’s started recording yet.
