Taylor Swift, Cardi B, and Justin Bieber are among several artists who could potentially make history at this year’s American Music Awards.
Swift, according to Billboard, is up for the coveted Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist award. If she wins, it’ll be her third time winning that category and her fifth AMA win overall—which would give her the record for most wins. Currently, she’s tied with Whitney Houston and Olivia Newton-John at four AMA wins.
Swift’s “Cardigan” video is also up for Favorite Music Video, which would make her the first two-time winner in the category. She won the award in 2017 for “You Need To Calm Down.”
Justin Bieber also has the potential to set a record at this year’s AMA’s, which will take place on November 22 in Los Angeles. The Canadian-born pop star is up for Favorite Male Pop/Rock Artist, and if he wins he’d become the first to win four; currently, he’s tied with Eric Clapton, Michael Bolton, Michael Jackson, and Barry Manilow at three awards.
In other notable AMA news, there were stunningly no rock acts nominated in any pop/rock categories this year. Every artist in those categories falls under the banner of pop music, with the possible exception of Post Malone who crossed over with an Ozzy Osbourne collaboration earlier this year.
Another exception is Tame Impala, who’s up for Favorite Artist in the Alternative Rock category. The band leans more heavily into synth and electronic territory these days, pushing them further away from the rock side of things. They’re nominated alongside Billie Eilish and Twenty One Pilots.
Favorite Duo or Group in Pop/Rock sees Maroon 5 up against BTS and the Jonas Brothers, while Harry Styles’ 70’s rock-influenced Fine Line is up for Favorite Album. That album, however, remains primarily a pop album despite its ventures into guitar-oriented psychedelia.
