Renowned musician Stevie Wonder made headlines this week when he released two new songs “Can’t Put It in the Hands of Fate” and “Where Is Our Love Song”. The songs were released with the launch of his new label, So What The Fuss Records. This marks his first time departing from a 60 year long career with Motown Records, who first signed the legendary artist when he was just 11 years old and went by the name Little Stevie Wonder. The exact reason for the change is unclear, but in a virtual press conference, Wonder said “Even though I have left Motown, I never leave Motown. That’s Detroit. So I’m sure that we can figure out how we can do some things at Motown.”
These two songs mark his first original release since the 2005 album A Time To Love. Wonder appears to be inspired for this comeback in part by a passion for social justice. All of the proceeds from the song “Where Is Our Love Song” will go to Feeding America. Of that donation, Wonder said “In these times, we are hearing the most poignant wake-up calls and cries for this nation and the world to, please, heed our need for love, peace and unity.”
Wonder also released a video on his YouTube page last month titled “The Universe Is Watching Us – Stevie Wonder In His Feelings” where he discusses his thoughts on the state of the world today, particularly in regards to his community and the Black Lives Matter movement. As he got teary, Wonder said “And for me, good trouble is bringing our nation, this nation, back together again. And the way we do that is to vote justice in and injustice out. We just can’t put November in the hands of fate. But we can put it in our hands. The universe is still watching us. And now, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is watching us, too.”
I can’t believe that Stevie Wonder has been with Motown records all this time! Nice article! One of the few artist that have continued to produce quality material decade after decade! I wish Stevie the greatest success with his new label! And hope to hear more wonderful things about a true legend in our wonderous world of music from the generation of brilliance that once was!
