The Billboard Music Awards went ahead this year in style, despite no audience being present for the show—and some of the biggest stars in music took home multiple awards.
Unsurprisingly, Billie Eilish won big at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, taking home the award for Top Female Artist as well as Top Billboard 200 Album for her mega-hit release When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Eilish had multiple nominations over the course of the night.
She ultimately lost Top Artist to Post Malone, who won several other awards as well. Malone took home the trophy for Top Rap Artist, Top Male Artist, and Top Billboard 100 Artist.
Harry Styles took home the Billboard Chart Achievement Award at the event, while BTS scored the prize for Top Social Artist. Given their position as arguably the most popular KPop artist and the biggest group on social media, BTS’ win wasn’t entirely unexpected.
The show was hosted by Kelly Clarkson, who led with enthusiasm and energy regardless of the fact that there was no audience present. There were plenty of memorable moments, including with Clarkson at the helm, but one show-stopping standout happened courtesy of John Legend.
Legend, whose wife Chrissy Teigan recently suffered the loss of their newborn baby, performed a tribute to his wife and their son Jack—who died just after birth due to complications including bleeding from the placenta.
The performance from Legend was a moving dedication to his family, and was met with applause and acclaim. He performed the song “Never Break” during the show.
