Rock icon Neil Young released a previously unheard recording of the song “Homefires,” which was recorded in 1974 and remained in the vault until now—being unveiled ahead of the release of his highly anticipated Archives Vol. 2: 1972-1976 box set.
The set, which compiles tons of unreleased recordings from arguably Young’s most acclaimed period, will include unreleased versions of hits as well as 12 songs that have never been made public before. “Homefires” has been played live numerous times but was never released on an album or in any public capacity until now.
The acoustic-based folk tune finds Young strumming rather gently and opening with a robust harmonica line, before a soft and emotive vocal enters. It’s a highlight in Young’s all-around stellar catalog, and a notable record of an important point in his long and varied career.
The musical chameleon, who has released dozens of studio albums over the past 50 years, also released a song from the box set prior to the release of “Homefires”; one that was also a regular inclusion in his live set without a proper studio release.
“Come Along And Say You Will” was recorded after 1972’s Harvest and played live up until 1973. It hasn’t been played since.
Archives Vol. 2 is set for release on November 20, and will include a whopping 131 songs spread across 10 discs.
Young also recently announced the release of an official bootleg recording of a 1974 concert at the Bottom Live in New York, which is coming out under the title The Bottom Line—Citizen Kane Jr. Blues. It’s notable for featuring songs off of his not-yet-released album On The Beach.
