Miley Cyrus has been in the news a lot lately for her incredibly well-done takes on classic songs like The Cranberries’ “Zombie” and Blondie’s “Heart of Glass.” It’s not the first time she’s taken on her favorites, but she’s been going a step further with the covers as of late.
Cyrus just revealed in an interview that her current project is in that same vein, though this time she’ll be paying tribute entirely to the legendary Metallica.
“We’ve been working on a Metallica cover album and I’m here working on that,” she revealed in a feature with Interview Magazine. “We’re so lucky to be able to continue to work on our art during all of this. At first, it felt uninspiring and now I’ve been totally ignited.”
The project seemingly began amid the pandemic, and was likely sparked by Cyrus’ lauded cover of the Metallica classic “Nothing Else Matters,” which she previously performed at Glastonbury. Though there aren’t any details yet as to who else is involved in the project, there has been speculation that it involves Andrew Watt—a musician in Cyrus’ band who notably produced and played guitar for Ozzy Osbourne.
Cyrus turned heads in 2019 when she joined Temple of the Dog to take on the classic “Say Hello 2 Heaven” in tribute to the late Chris Cornell, who fronted that project during his original run with Soundgarden. She garnered immense praise for the performance, which took place at a benefit show in honor of Cornell. In fact, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich said at the time that he was “stunned” by Cyrus’ vocals on the song.
