“Sit down, be humble.” Iconic hip-hop rapper Kendrick Lamar really knows how to put his lyrics into practice, considering his album “Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City” has been declared the “longest-charting hip-hop album in US chart history.”
Released through Top Dawg Entertainment, Lamar’s 2012 album has officially spent 400 weeks on the Billboard 200, according to Billboard. This surpasses Eminem’s “The Eminem Show” which hit 383 weeks, and Drake’s “Take Care” reaching 382 weeks.
Peaking at #2, his major label debut features hits including “Swimming Pools (Drank)”, “Backseat Freestyle”, and “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe”. His second studio album was mostly recorded at several studios around California, and world-renowned producers contributed to the collection of tracks- Pharrell Williams, Dr. Dre, and Scoop DeVille to name a few.
The hip-hop legend released two more albums in 2015 and 2017, keeping fans on their toes as they wait for updates on any new releases. According to NME, “TDE boss Anthony ‘Top Dawg’ Tiffith offered a minor update to the rapper’s expectant fans during an Instagram Live session where he said: ‘Stay patient. King Kendrick will return soon.’”
Hopefully, the cancellation of Glastonbury Festival and London’s BST Hyde Park – two shows Lamar was set to headline – will give him more time to focus on a 5th studio album.
In the meantime, we’ll have to stay up to date with Lamar’s social platforms in hopes of an announcement. Congratulations Kendrick, way to set the record!
