Indie Music, tracks produced by artists through independent labels, suffers from being wildly underrated and often ignored. In spite of this, emerging labels have given us artists who have formed contemporary music as we know it.
In the 1950s Memphis’s Sun Records signed such icons as Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Eventually, these recording artists would make 100s of millions for larger labels (and allows Sun’s owner, Sam Phillips, to buy a ton of Holiday Inn stock).
Currently, labels like Matador, Six Shooter Records, and Heavenly, to name only a few, continue to provide an avenue for musicians bent on taking the road less traveled.
At no other time in history have we had the vast variety of music at our fingertips that we do today; yet many of us settle for being spoon fed mainstream fair from familiar names (and the powerful corporations behind them).
Admittedly, it’s hard to know exactly where to fish in the vast digital seas of music.
It’s eminently worth the effort, however.
Indie music is for the many artists who pour their heart and souls into their work, establishing deep connections with their fans. These artists don’t play for the audience and financial gain alone. They create music because they must.
This indie/ singer songwriter playlist is a guide to artists who remain true to their craft while stirring our deepest emotions.
